JK Police receives highest number of Gallantry Medals, LG praises

The Centre on Saturday released a list of 1,380 Police personnel who have been honoured with gallantry and distinguished services awards have been awarded Medals on the occasion of Independence Day, 2021.
J&K Police Sub-Inspector Amar Deep has been awarded with the highest gallantry award- PPMG, while the Head Constable late Kale Sunil Dattatraya of CRPF has been given PPMG posthumously.
A total of 662 police personnel will receive Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), 628 personnel will be feliciated with President's Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) and 662 will get for Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM). Besides, 88 personnel will receive President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM) on 75th I-Day.
The Gallantry medals' awardee, include 256 from J&K Police, 151 from CRPF, 23 from Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), 67 from Odisha Police, 25 from Maharashtra Police, 20 from Chhattisgarh and the remaining from the other states, Union Territories and other Central Armed Police Forces.
Among the majority of the 628 Gallantry Awards, 398 personnel are being awarded for their gallant action in Jammu & Kashmir region, 155 personnel for their gallant action in Left Wing Extremism affected areas and 27 personnel for their gallant action in North-East Region.
“23 ITBP personnel have been awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry on 75th Independence Day. Out of these, as many as 20 have been awarded for bravery in eastern Ladakh skirmishes in May-June, 2020. This is the highest number of gallantry medals for ITBP awarded for the bravery of its men in border face-off/ skirmishes/border guarding duties”, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) said in a statement.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said he is proud of the Jammu and Kashmir Police's bravery and the sacrifices made by the force in defending the sovereignty of the country.
The LG's remarks came after Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel were awarded gallantry awards including Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra on the eve of Independence Day.
“Proud of bravery and sacrifices made by Jammu and Kashmir Police in defending the sovereignty of the country. Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra and 257 police gallantry medals to JKP at the forefront of fight against terrorism is commendable,” Sinha said on Twitter.
He said Assistant Sub-Inspector Babu Ram has been selected for this year's Ashok Chakra award (posthumous), Constable Altaf Hussain Bhat for Kirti Chakra (posthumous) and Special Police Officer (SPO) Shahbaz Ahmad for Shaurya Chakra (posthumous) for their acts of bravery, valour and selfless sacrifice for the motherland.
81 gallantry awards for Jammu and Kashmir police
As many as 275 policemen and paramilitary personnel have been awarded police medals for gallantry announced on the eve of Independence Day.
At 81, Jammu and Kashmir received the maximum number of medals, followed by 23 for the U.P Police and 16 for Delhi Police.
55 medals for CRPF
Among the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) or paramilitary forces, 55 such medals have gone to the CRPF and one to the BSF.
A total of 926 police personnel have also been recognised for their services with 80 personnel awarded the President's Police Medals for Distinguished Service. The Police Medal for Meritorious Service has been awarded to 631 personnel. No one has been given the President's Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) this time.
Deputy Inspector General, South Kashmir, Atul Kumar Goel and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep posted at Anantnag received PMGs.
Seven policemen from Uttar Pradesh including Inspector General Asim Arun received the PMG for the 2017 operation at Lucknow when an Islamic State terrorist Saifullah was killed.
Posthumous award
Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who was killed during the 2008 Batla House encounter, has been awarded a gallantry medal posthumously for the seventh time.
CRPF Assistant Commandant Naresh Kumar also won the bravery medal for the seventh time for undertaking counter-terrorist operations in the Kashmir valley.
BSF Assistant Commandant Vinay Prasad has been awarded a bravery medal posthumously. Vinay Prasad was killed in unprovoked firing by Pakistan when he was out on an operational task with his patrol team in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir in January last year.
