Jammu, Mar 23
Trilingual production by Pravin Kumar Gunjan Gabarghichor was staged today at Abhinav Theatre on day-2 as a part of Jammu edition of the ongoing 8th Theatre Olympics, which was inaugurated here yesterday. Gabarghichor is the story of the illegitimate son of Garbari and Galij's wife. The play is based on folklore of Bihar and has been recreated to fit contemporary theatre, dealing with the situation of women who are expected to make sacrifices at every level and were seen as the inferior gender.
Galij wants to take Ghichor back to Calcutta with him but his wife and Garbari intervene. A quarrel ensues as each of them claims Ghichor to be theirs. The panchayat decides that Ghichor be divided into three pieces. A man comes and measures Ghichor's body and agrees to do the job for four annas a piece. The mother relents and is ready to give up her claim on the son. The panchayat finally decides that Ghichor should stay with his mother. The play deals with the situation of women in those times where they were expected to make sacrifices at every level and were seen as the inferior gender. Sadly this situation is prevalent even today and is a matter of huge concern. Tomorrow's Highlight: Oondra (Director: Rakesh Khatri; Group: Anupam Rang Theatre Society (ARTS), Jaipur; Language: Rajasthani; Duration: 1 Hour 50 Minutes).
