Srinagar, August 28 : Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha on Saturday said that people of Jammu and Kashmir play a vital role in eradicating the polythene problem from the Union Territory as well as making the Smart Cities dream come true.
LG Manoj Sinha was speaking at the event “Polythene Free Srinagar” organised by Srinagar Municipal Corporation at Sher-i-Kashmir park in central Kashmir's Srinagar.
He said that today we have taken up the project to make the garden of Srinagar polythene free.
Quoting the famous saying of ‘God always forgives, we men forgive sometimes, but nature never forgives', LG Sinha said that the saying is an old one but now the world is witnessing the troubles and impact of Global warming over us.
“Nature never forgives, it is surely something to remember,” he added.
LG Sinha said that the Mayor Srinagar, Commissioner SMC and other members had acted quickly and last month only stopped the sale of polythene and single-use polythene completely.
Plastic pollution and waste management is not something that can be tackled only by the government and without the important role of people of Jammu as well as Kashmir these issues cannot be solved, he added.
“We should remember one thing that Srinagar, Jammu or Kashmir will only become polythene free when all the people take up their responsibility towards nature,” LG said.
He further requested every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir, especially the youth to join in helping our society become polythene free.
LG Sinha said that according to the Survey of India (2009), in the Kashmir valley there are a total of 415 lakes. “Srinagar was warned about 14 lakes that are in danger,” he said, adding that we are responsible for it and not anyone from the outside.
He said now it is the responsibility for all of us to make things right and save these water bodies from getting completely ruined.
We must understand the pain of nature; he emphasised and said, “It is time to correct ourselves.”
“If we don't take these important initiatives now, in 2050 there will be more plastic in the flowing water of the rivers,” LG J&K said, adding that the building can be rebuilt but if nature gets destroyed then it does not come back.
