Shopkeepers threatened with FIRs for keeping shops closed on Aug 5: Mehbooba

SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party President and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti Saturday alleged that the government of (GOI) threatened shopkeepers with FIRs who had shut their shops on August 5 as a mark of protest.

Taking to Twitter, Mehbooba said this move along with terminating government employees on “trivial” grounds and denying & passports to locals was among the confidence-building measures initiated by the GOI since the all-party meeting held by the Prime Minister in June this year.

“GOI threatening shopkeepers with FIRs for shutting their shops on 5th Aug as a mark of protest is the latest addition to the growing number of CBMs for Kashmiris since the all-party meeting. First CBM – firing govt employees on trivial grounds followed by denying jobs & passports.”

Earlier on Thursday, photographs and videos had gone viral on social media in which the police allegedly had cut open the locks of shops in Srinagar following a shutdown on August 5 which marks the day when Article 370 was read down and erstwhile state of and was bifurcated into union territories two years ago.
