Renovated Mubarak-Mandi Heritage will boost tourism: LG Sinha

Jammu Tawi, Jan 18: Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha today chaired the meeting of Governing Body of the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society and reviewed the to-date progress of restoration and renovation works of the Mubarak Mandi Complex, here at the Raj Bhavan.

During the meeting, the Lt Governor who is the Chairman of the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society took a comprehensive review of different works under execution for transforming the Mubarak Mandi Complex as a major tourist attraction in Jammu.

The Lt Governor was briefed about the completion stages of restoration works of different buildings of the complex, financial progress achieved under different schemes and measures to improve connectivity and access to Mubarak Mandi Complex.

The Lt Governor also issued directions to expedite the restoration and conservation works for early completion of the projects for restoring the Dogra heritage palaces as per the desire of the people.

While enquiring about the tourist footfall in the heritage complex, the Lt Governor observed that the renovated Mubarak Mandi complex will boost the sector in Jammu.

Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta, Chief Secretary; Sh. Sarmad Hafeez, Administrative Secretary, Tourism Department; Sh. Achal Sethi, Law Secretary, J&K; Sh Raghav Langer, Divisional Commissioner Jammu; Sh Rahul Pandey, Director, Archives, Archaeology & Museums; Sh Vivekanand Rai, Director Tourism, Jammu; Ms Deepika K Sharma, Executive Director, Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society; besides other concerned officers were present on the occasion.

Earlier the decision to convert portion of historic Mubarak Mandi complex into Heritage Hotel was made by the Governing Body of the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society several years back but thereafter no further steps were taken.

Accordingly, the Society has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for development of Heritage Hotel in one portion of the mammoth complex, sources said, adding “the Government is of the opinion that this is the only way to make the adaptive reuse of the complex as mentioned in the Master Plan and generate sufficient revenue for the proper maintenance of whole complex in future”.

For conversion into Heritage Hotel, the Government has identified residential palaces situated in the eastern part of heritage complex called Zanana Mahal having unique architecture and exquisite interior decorations in the form of wall paintings, mirror work, decorative ceilings and exceptional spatial qualities.

The Zanana Mahal Complex spread over 9419.35 square metre consists of six buildings—Rani Bandrali Mahal, Mahal of Raja Amar Singh's queens, Rani Guleri Mahal, Rani Charak Mahal, Mahal of Raja Ram Singh queens and Nawa Mahal.

The Expression of Interest for development of Heritage Hotel has been invited under Public Private Partnership mode on Design Develop-Finance-Build-Maintain and Operate basis. It has been mentioned in the document that this step will lead to creation of world class category/ class Heritage Hotel with allied facilities which would attract / users.

Disclosing that several top hoteliers of the country have already shown keen interest in development of Heritage Hotel, sources said, “Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society will ensure that during the conversion of identified portion into Heritage Hotel the original architecture of the buildings is not fiddled with and protected properly”.
