Amidst the monsoon in most parts of north-west covering up the earlier deficit, the office has predicted more heavy rains in many areas of Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh this week.

Under the prevailing weather system, heavy rainfall at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana is expected, while scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm or lightning is very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi during next three days, the weatherman said.

“Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana during July 12-14 and over Punjab on July 13-14,” a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today states.

While rainfall in the month of July so far in Punjab is at par with the long period average, it is 23 percent above normal in Haryana and 17 percent above normal in Himachal Pradesh, according to the IMD.

From July 1 to July 12, Haryana received 63.9 mm rain as compared to the normal of 52 mm for this period, IMD data shows. Himachal Pradesh received 100.1 mm against the normal of 85.6 mm while Punjab received 56.4 mm against the normal of 56.5 mm.

Rains in the early phase of monsoon were deficient in the region, even as several heat waves and high levels of humidity were experienced. Even the water level in crucial dams has remained below normal.
