All women, married or unmarried, entitled to safe and legal abortion till 24 weeks of pregnancy

Date:

NEW DELHI, Sept 29: The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that unmarried woman can undergo abortion up to 24 weeks.
The apex court said that all women are entitled to safe and legal abortion. The SC said the marital status of a woman can't be ground to deprive her right to abort unwanted pregnancy.
“Single and unmarried women have right to abort under Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and rules till 24 weeks of pregnancy,” said SC.
The court was hearing a plea related to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and the rules to eliminate discrimination between married and unmarried women for allowing abortion till 24 weeks of pregnancy.
The court said that the distinction between married and unmarried women was “artificial and constitutionally unsustainable”. “It perpetuates stereotype that only married women indulge in sexual activities,” the court said.
