Pertinently, a man identified as Tariq Ahmed Mir was arrested by National Investigation Agency yesterday in connection with a case related to disgraced police officer Davinder Singh. Mir who hails from Pulwama was actually residing at Sheeri Baramulla, wherefrom he was picked by the investigating agency.

BJP spokesperson clarified that Mir was ousted from the party in 2018 and the party has nothing to do with a person like Mir who is having criminal record.

“We don't support people having links with militants or any other anti-national organization,” the spokesperson informed.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday arrested an alleged arms dealer, in connection with a case related to suspended Dy SP Davinder Singh who is already under custody for ferrying terrorists outside the Kashmir valley among other things.

The accused, identified as Tariq Mir, a resident of Maldoora of Shopian District in Kashmir, was the fifth person arrested in the case which came to light when Singh was arrested along with three terrorists including a most wanted Hizbul Mujahideen commander in January this year.

Mir, who was elected as Sarpanch on a National Conference ticket, had contested the 2014 assembly elections in the erstwhile state from Wachi assembly seat in South Kashmir on a BJP ticket. He secured a little over 1,000 votes in the election.

The NIA produced him before a special court in Jammu that remanded him to six days in the agency's custody after it was alleged that he had been indulging in arms supply to various terror groups operating in the valley and also had links with Singh.

The NIA, which has been carrying out investigations even during the time when the entire is battling the novel coronavirus, is hopeful of getting more links during his interrogation.

Mir's election affidavit listed his email id as “BJP.watch.Tariq121@gmail.com”, and said he is a resident of Shopian. The affidavit also said he has never been charged with any criminal offence and does not have any criminal case registered against him.

Interestingly, though Mir claimed to be a businessman in his affidavit, in the column asking for details of last income tax return and income, he wrote “Nil”.

He also mentioned that he had “Nil” investments, “Nil” loans, “Nil” movable assets, “Nil” cash in hand, no cars or any other vehicles, no jewellery, no land — agricultural or commercial — and no inherited property. He just mentioned one property, where he resides, as being in his father's name.

In the affidavit, he also mentioned a “loan to bank” of Rs 7 lakh that he took from the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, but showed his liabilities as “Rs 3 lakh”.

“He claims to be a businessman but he has no assets, no cash, no land, no IT returns. He does not even mention what kind of he runs. It is all very suspicious,” a source in the NIA said.

Singh was arrested along with Hizbul Mujahideen commander Naveed Babu, his close associate and a lawyer who was working as an overground worker for terrorists at Mir Bazar on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on January 11, while they were on their way to Jammu.

A large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the house of Singh in Srinagar, right next to the Army's XV corps headquarters at Badami Bagh cantonment, where he had sheltered the trio before leaving for Jammu.

Last month, the Delhi Police”s Special Cell had brought Singh and the other three accused to the national capital from different jails in Jammu and Kashmir as it was believed that the terrorists were planning to execute attacks in Delhi and other parts of the country and targeted killings of protected persons.
